The Challenge
The drilling contractor needed a complete BOP stack package for a newbuild land rig destined for a sour gas drilling campaign in Oman. The stack required a 10,000 PSI working pressure rating with API 16A Class 5 annular BOP performance, double ram configuration, and full API 16D closing unit. The customer specified DNV type approval and required a witnessed factory acceptance test (FAT) at JLD's facility. Lead time was critical — the rig had a contracted spud date 18 weeks from order placement.
The Solution
JLD Energy supplied a complete BOP stack package: one API 16A annular blowout preventer (10K), one double ram BOP with pipe and blind/shear rams, a choke manifold with dual Model H2 adjustable chokes, kill manifold, and an API 16D BOP closing unit with 160-gallon accumulator bank. All blowout preventer components were manufactured with NACE MR-01-75 compliant materials for sour gas service. The FAT was conducted over three days with DNW surveyors in attendance. All tests passed on first attempt: shell test at 15,000 PSI, seat tests with nitrogen (PSL 3G), closing time tests on both ram and annular BOPs (under 30 seconds per API 16A requirements), and full function test of the BOP control unit.
The Result
The complete BOP stack was delivered in 16 weeks — two weeks ahead of schedule. The stack was rigged up and successfully passed the pre-spud BOP test on the first attempt. The contractor has subsequently standardized on JLD Energy BOP equipment for their three additional newbuild rigs, representing a multi-year framework agreement. The BOP stack has operated continuously through 12 wells without a single NPT (non-productive time) incident attributed to BOP equipment.
